A Dedicated Research Lab Unlike Any Other

At the heart of the department’s research mission is the Orthopaedic Translational Engineering Lab (OTEL), a one-of-a-kind facility focused on rapidly moving innovative technologies from the bench to the bedside. Working as a highly interdisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers, foundational scientists, and graduate students, OTEL’s research facility contains both BSL-2+ and regular engineering space within a short walk from orthopedic ORs and the clinic. Infrastructure Built for Discovery

The department benefits from a rich ecosystem of research support, including the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center for Orthopaedics (DBEC) at Thayer School of Engineering — the world’s foremost total joint implant retrieval lab, having examined over 7,000 orthopedic implants from more than 1,000 surgeons over the past 30 years.
