On an annual basis, the department produces approximately 89 peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed manuscripts, 148 podium and poster presentations, and secures over $17 million in external research funding from sources including the NIH, NCI, PCORI, DoD, and OREF. A Dedicated Research Lab Unlike Any Other

At the heart of the department’s research mission is the Orthopaedic Translational Engineering Lab (OTEL), a one-of-a-kind facility focused on rapidly moving innovative technologies from the bench to the bedside. Working as a highly interdisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers, foundational scientists, and graduate students, OTEL’s research facility contains both BSL-2+ and regular engineering space within a short walk from orthopedic ORs and the clinic. Infrastructure Built for Discovery

The department benefits from a rich ecosystem of research support, including the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center for Orthopaedics (DBEC) at Thayer School of Engineering — the world’s foremost total joint implant retrieval lab, having examined over 7,000 orthopedic implants from more than 1,000 surgeons over the past 30 years. Additional resources include the Center for Shared Decision Making, the Center for Surgical Innovation — equipped with MRI and CT machines that can move in and out of two spacious operating rooms for translational research — and a longstanding collaboration with The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, providing access to over 50 million Medicare records.
