Academic and Research Partnerships

As the flagship hospital of the academic medical system, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center serves as the teaching hospital and research partner for the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In addition to DHMC, clinical rotations for Geisel medical students take place in a range of medical centers in New England and across the U.S. Geisel’s other primary affiliated teaching hospitals include the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT; California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, and Indian Health Service medical centers.

DHMC also offers 49 accredited Graduate Medical Education programs training nearly 400 residents and fellows annually, vigorously promoting the training of tomorrow’s health care leaders. Our Center for Learning and Professional Development (CLPD) offers diverse and innovative learning opportunities to enable health care professionals to improve their knowledge, skills, and behaviors.

Additionally, Dartmouth Health’s partnership with Colby-Sawyer College reaches across the spectrum of health sciences, offering a variety of degree programs that support working professionals who want to further their education. Colby-Sawyer College is considered Dartmouth Health’s nursing school and we also maintain affiliations with more than 80 nursing schools in support of our employees. To help navigate these options, Dartmouth Health offers personalized academic advising and consultation with professional clinical educators.

DHMC’s research endeavors are robust, daring, and imaginative, and every day our teams, in partnership with the Geisel School and with Dartmouth, further critical clinical, translational, and population-based research initiatives. Our clinical trials have led to numerous breakthroughs in various fields—from a recent epilepsy surgery trial that culminated in the first implant of neurostimulator devices targeting four specific areas of the brain, to a Dartmouth Cancer Center trial that aided the development of an AI-augmented digital system for identifying colon polyps. Collectively, these initiatives not only enhance the quality of care for patients here in Lebanon and across the system, but pave the way for worldwide advances in medicine.
